For my project I decided to focus on a greenhouse on campus that is not in use and is being used for storage instead. Personally I think it is a waist of space and resources, and I chose that as my issue for this project.
My first postcard "The More The Merrier." I used repetition to try and convey my thought that we could use more greenhouses/green spaces. I also used repetition to allude to the fact that we may need more air conditioning units in the future because of global temperature increases.
My second postcard focuses on how I see the space as cut off. I replaced the windows with cement to give it a closed feeling. I also chose a bright color and discrete texture to make it a little unsettling. I also chose this color because it reminds me of ultraviolet light which is used to grow plants indoors.
For my final postcard I chose to show what could be. Though this greenhouse would be better used for food production, it was easier to fill it with flowers. I decided to make the colors faded to show it is an idea and not a reality. Though I hope that one day in the future we can use it for education and food production instead of storage. This image is my edited version, I will post my original bellow my concept map.

My favorite postcard is your third one. I enjoyed how you made your image black and white and then added a pop of color with your words to lead people's eye to your main message. The images of the flowers were very well integrated into your original image, very realistic. Your concept was very unique and clever and nicely executed.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the first image the most – and while the technical composition is done efficiently – I enjoy the idea behind it more. The concept that we have this unused space on campus that could benefit the student body but also nature as well is a great idea. Creating more greenhouses is a great concept but I would perhaps tone down the saturation on the flowers to be less prominent if the focus is on the number of greenhouses in your composition.
ReplyDeletemy favorite postcard is number 3. I liked how you filled the greenhouse with what you hope it could be. and the wording is very bold making the problem known.
ReplyDeleteOf the three, the second Dutch angle solution is my favorite. It brings home the idea that the space isn't ideal, and in fact seems somewhat threatening or suspicious. The front of the postcard works well with this.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do feel that some time exploring the the options available to you in Photoshop would help. Many times, the solutions don't feel quite so integrated, though they are certainly well on their way.
Perhaps this is personal preference, but it takes away from your solutions when one part integrates and another doesn't. Regardless, you certainly have good ideas, and I'd be interested to see them further developed.
Your third postcard is my favorite! I think you did a lovely job making the greenhouse look as if it is truly filled with all of those plants. I automatically understood that you were trying to convey a sense of contrast, having “such a waste” really pop. It’s direct. It utilizing a sense of fantasy too, as well as irony.
ReplyDeleteI liked the last image. Knowing that there were no plants in there before and seeing all of them added is intriguing. Unlike the first image, where the plants are added outside of the greenhouse and equipment inside. Photoshop was good. I think the first image could have been worked on a little more, making it a bit more realistic. I like the theme of the project and that it meant something greater to you.
ReplyDeleteMiranda,
ReplyDeleteI choose your first postcard to work with because I really like the repetition of your flowers. The flowers themselves remind me of Andy Warhol and his pop art works. I think that it’s a really jarring contrast between the colors of the flowers and the neutral color of the greenhouse itself. I think it’s really funny to have to flowers outside of the greenhouse because normally flowers would go inside of the greenhouse.
Miranda,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the concept behind the third postcard the best based on the way you edited the colors of the greenhouse. You gave it a lifeless tone and I the addition of the plants on the inside is a great touch. That being said I thing that phrasing of the text could have maybe shed a light on the possibilities of the greenhouse’s functions. You very clearly voice your opinion on Universities use of the greenhouse and bring attention to an issue that can be very easily resolved.

Miranda,
ReplyDeleteI like how you addressed the greenhouse on campus. I didn’t know that it was not in use – so sad! My favorite postcard is the second – but because of the negative feeling it gives me. Good job in provoking an emotion! Good choice on a jarring color. I like how you filled the glass walls with cement walls. There is a gritty texture given to the image as well that adds to the emotion provoked in the image.
Miranda,
ReplyDeleteI thought you did a wonderful job. I actually had no idea we had a teen house on campus so thank you for bringing light to that for me. It is very sad GVSU isn't using it properly. That would be an awesome learning opportunity for several students whom I'm sure would love a degree in that area. Not to mention another way for GVSU to get more money with another subject and teachers to teach. But I also liked your wording on the last one, I understood what you were trying to get at by not having it engraved into the cement. I thought you did very well with the project!
Miranda,
ReplyDeleteI like your third image the best. It shows how the greenhouse may have looked in the past, and could look in the future. I pass by the greenhouse a lot on my commute, and I never knew it was being used as a storage place instead of as a greenhouse.
